The Inside Howl!

Where We Run With The Pack!

The Life of an Immigrant’s Child

When coming into the United States, the first thing you would realize is how amazing the place is or how everyone can basically do whatever they want to do, of course it has to be legal. Having the ability to do what you like and go freely is an amazing feeling. Many people, whom I love so much, had to leave just like the snow does when winter is over. Even though most people get deported, we still need to be proud of where we came from and who we are because it’s makes us the people that we are today. So I’d like to thank my parents for the sacrifices they made for a better for me.

There are many others who work hard just for their family or their own education. Over time many immigrants search for a better future for their family and themselves. In 2014, President Barack Obama signed executive orders directing various agencies in the departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security to refrain from deporting some 4 million adult immigrants illegally. If the immigrants are parents of a child that are born here or legally present here and they hold a job, and attend high school diploma, pay taxes, and stay out of prison.

My mom was 12 years old when she first took step into the United States, she never planned for it or thought it would ever happen. She told me stories of how the world was scary for a young child to go through, and that it was the most extreme risky thing that has ever happened to her.  She also told how crossing El Rio Grande (The Grand River) was the most terrifying experience ever. She would have to swim and make sure her sibling didn’t drown because back then, my mom was the 3rd oldest, so she had to take care of her little sibling. My mom would say don’t forget your culture, your family who brought you here, and I came here for a better future for my family and that’s what I want. She would keep telling me that,”Education is important and you need a good job because I could never do what you can.” Of course I would use this for motivation and I know I’m not the only one going through the same thing.

Bittersweet Process – Giselle N.

Have you ever wondered how the coffee in your Starbucks drink is made? It is actually a very long process and requires a lot of attention in order to provide consumers with the best quality of coffee.

A coffee bean, firstly, is a seed, and specifically, a fruit. These coffee beans are planted in large beds and given lots of water and moisture, so they’re usually planted during the wet season. They mostly stay in the shade.

It takes about three to four years for a coffee tree to start bearing fruit. They’re called coffee cherries and turn a bright deep red when they’re ripe. There are two ways that these cherries can be harvested. One method is strip picking which when all the cherries are stripped off of their branch. Another method is selectively picking which is the ripest cherries will be handpicked. This is the most most expensive and requires more hard labor and is used in finer Arabica beans.

After the cherries are picked, they have to be processed. There are two methods that can be done to do this. The first method is the dry method. This is an age-old method that is mostly used in water deprived areas. The beans are laid out to be sun dried and protected from any exposure from moisture. They are raked and turned throughout the day, so that they don’t spoil. The moisture level has to drop down to 11%.  The wet method is where the cherries go through a machine where their pulp and skin are removed from the bean. They are separated by weight and put into fermentation tanks where a layer of mucilage is dissolved. The beans that went through this method then have to go through the same drying process as the other method.

From here, They have to be graded and sorted. They are reviewed by size, weight, and color. Now that the milled beans, or green coffee, have been checked, they are put into containers, ready to be shipped. Brazil holds the title for the largest coffee exporting nation.

They are tested for the best quality and taste called cupping. The taster, cupper, first checks the visual quality. Then the coffee is roasted and brewed, so that the cupper can best experience the aroma. To taste the coffee, the person inhales a spoonful and the purpose for this is so that it evenly spreads across the tastebuds, and then spits it out. This testing is important because it also analyzes what kind of blends of coffee go together and what is the proper roasting.

When you roast coffee, it turns from a green bean to a brown one. In a roasting machine, the temperature has to approximately be 550 degrees fahrenheit and the beans have to be constantly turned so that they don’t burn up. Once they have an internal temperature of about 400 degrees, they begin to turn brown and an oil called caffeol is released which is what gives coffee its aroma and flavor. This process is called pyrolysis. The beans can be cooled by air or water.

The coffee can now be grinded into different textures. How fine or how course depends on the kind of method that is used. Now, you can start to brew your coffee and add flavoring to your liking.

As can be seen, it’s an extensive process that a coffee bean goes through in order to help you get through your day. It’s an international drink that people all over the world share.

Berkleys New Club for the upcoming Youth

Fishing or Angling has been a means of sport and food since the beginning of time, for example there are paintings and scenes of ancient  Egyptians fishing with  line and nets which date back to 2000 B.C.E. Just like back then fishing is still a big means of food and sport. Example of this are the many fishing tournaments which are held around the country. Ones such as the Yamaha Contender: Miami Bill fish Tournament in Florida, or the Lake Havana City Striper Derby in Arizona, and the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo in Florida. But these few are just some of many examples of the many tournaments held all around the world. But are tournaments aren’t the only example fishing is still being embraced today. There’s many organizations which have built themselves  like H.O.F.N.O.D (Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs), the I.G F.A (International Game and Fish Association), and the F.L.W (Fishing League Worldwide). But among all these clubs only a few organizations are pointed towards the upcoming and fishers. But then Berkley Fishing created the Berkley High School Fishing Club. This Club is towards the young men and women of America who are between the ages of 13 and 19. Berkley says “The program encourages students to learn new fishing and techniques while raising awareness of environmental stewardship and conservation” meaning that this program is to teach the upcoming generation that this planet and the environment is special and that they should help care and conserve it, all through teaching the youth how to fish. This fundamentally Eco-friendly club is a great way for teenagers and young adults to get involved in the community by Berkley challenging kids to teach others how to fish or cast and also by challenging them to volunteer at local fishing challenges. But these aren’t the only challenges that Berkley offers. Every day you can go to their website ( and do challenges such as watching a small video and answering a question, reading a blog and answering questions, posting photos of the fish you caught, uploading photos of your favorite Berkley Hard Bait, and just simple questions like did you go fishing today. But what else does this club offer? Well how about a little friendly competition, Berkley says “high school students compete individually against other students to become the best angler in the nation” meaning that this club isn’t just a personal website, but also a competition website. But students aren’t only competing by themselves, Berkley states “high school teams compete against other teams to become the winners of The Challenge”. Teams go head to head to see which team is the best at fishing. This challenge as Berkley puts it is a “chance to win $4000 in Berkley and Abu Garcia products”. Abu Garcia is a high class fishing company which specializes in rods and reels. And Berkley (being the main sponsor of the club) Specializes in line, rods, reels, and baits. So the best of the teams will be getting authentic gear for their fishing careers. But what if you don’t really go fishing and don’t know how? Again Berkley’s goal is to teach kids how to enjoy and conserve nature so don’t worry about it. Some of the video challenges Berkley offers teaches kids who don’t know how to fish to fish. Whether it be tying knots, or talking about lures Berkley really does this to help the upcoming youth with fishing and helps teach them to conserve nature. So next time your line don’t forget to visit the Berkley High School Fishing School.

MLS Soccer Season Begins!

Last Sunday, one of the most exciting events for us American soccer fans began, The M.L.S season. Us soccer fans love this time of the year because we get to experience a new competition and see who will turn out champion. Last year’s victorious team was the Portland Timbers, a team from Oregon. Most people who like the sport in the nation know some of the brief history of the league. There is a lot of history to this soccer association. It was officially created on December, 17 1993. The whole creation of it began with the bidding of the 1993 World Cup. When FIFA announced that the World Cup would take place in the U.S, people thought that we should have a professional league to make the sport ‘bigger’ in the country. Although the league consists of many American teams, there are also some Canadian teams as well. There are only 3 Canadian teams, as opposed to the 18 American teams. These Canadian teams are Toronto F.C, Montreal Impact, and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Many People are huge fans of the league and support one specific team. I am a fan of New York City F.C, a team based in N.Y.C as stated in the name. Many people do not know this, but N.Y.C F.C is actually one of the newer clubs in the league. It was established in 2015. Once I found out about this, I was glad because I thought New York needed a new team to compete for the title. When the team was first created, it acquired some good players that played for top clubs in Europe (the hardest continent of soccer). NYC FC bought an FC Barcelona legend by the name of David Villa, a Juventus FC legend by the name of Andrea Pirlo, and a Chelsea FC legend by the name of Frank Lampard. These three players were veterans of the game, each winning multiple titles around europe. To conclude, the M.L.S may not be commonly known around the U.S, but I believe it will be a part of our lives in the future.

Elizabeth Lee Miller

Elizabeth Lee Miller is a was an American Photographer. Unfortunately, she still is not alive anymore, she died back in July 21, 1977, she died due to cancer at the age of 70. She was cremated and her ashes were spread through her herb garden. But before she died, at a young age, her and her brother was introduced to photography. She was his father’s modeled. But she usually modeled nude, which she was embarrassed after getting gonorrhea after being raped by a family friend. But, that didn’t stop her from being a very famous fashion model and photographer.  At age 19 she nearly stepped in front of a car on a Manhattan street but was prevented by Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue. This incident helped launch her modeling career; she appeared in an illustration by George Lepape on the cover of the Vogue edition of March 15, 1927. After that, she become one of the most successful models in New York City, in the 1920’s. But after that, she moved to paris, where she became a fashion and fine art photographer. She wasn’t really noticed from her work, it was after she died she became noticed. She mostly photographed pictures from World War II. But, she was famous for her picture in Hitler’s bathtub.  Apparently, it had a lot more meaning than just the fact that she was in Hitler’s bathtub.

She was published in many places like, Vogue, Glim Glory, etc. It didn’t say, or I didn’t find, what type of education that she had.  She’s been to many places like, New York, Paris, Manhattan, London, and Munich. But, I hope more people don’t just know her as “The Girl in Hitler’s Bathtub,” but as a women who’d like to take risks for her career. A women, who went through a lot and was able to face her obstacles. This was Elizabeth Lee Miller.

Spring break Alternatives

Forget Cancun. Forget Vail. And forget your childhood bedroom, replete with stuffed animals and a stack of comic books from 1997, there are better ways to spend your spring break.

  • Volunteer around the world.

Instead of going out just partying or even staying home and doing nothing, you can actually travel and volunteer. Just visit:

  • Volunteer nearby.

You don’t have to travel to extravagant places just to do some good in the world. Go to your local children’s home, animal shelter, and/or soup kitchen. If there are other volunteering locations you can go to, do it! Every small detail counts.

  • Organize!

It’s spring! Get your spring cleaning out of the way. Organize your closet, kitchen, bathroom, anything. Rearrange, do anything related to cleaning. It sounds like a lot of work, and boring, but get some friends to help, open up the house, dorm, or apartment, and play some music.

  • Get active.

Take a hike, go for a walk, go to the gym. No, I’m not calling you lazy, but it’s a good way to stay fit, and it passes the time. It doesn’t even have to be going to the gym, you can do anything that gets your heart racing.

  • Shadowing

What I mean by this is say you’re considering your options for a career, go ahead and get the first hand experience by job shadowing someone . It can be a week long shadow, or just a day or two.

  •  Become a Big Sister, or Big Brother.

No don’t get your mom pregnant. That’s ridiculous. Instead go to: Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is a foundation that assigns you to a younger child, and lets you meet and do many activities with them. The point is to help children develop strong supportive relationships with positive role models.

There are so many other things you can do to impact the world, or just your life. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. Besides, the smallest things make the biggest differences.

We can see to the side one of his most famous photos. Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 8.15.41 PMThis photo is titled A Soldier in Despair. We can also see the sadness in most of his pictures. The black and white only make it that more impactful. There is no color just as in the situation, just as there seems to be no hope for the people in the images. Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 8.17.17 PM

jaapan 3 Japan is a place full of wonders and colors during spring. Many thought that the sakura trees contained spirits and made offerings. Hanami is the term for the festivities of viewing the cherry blossom trees. They celebrate this in parks, temples and shrines. Most celebrations take place during the day but others prefer dusk for the lanterns and with the pink glow that the trees give off.
